EXGB took an excursion to Gloucestershire for Round 2 of the 2024 EXGP British EX Championship, and with points on the line and a vast entry, it proved to be one of their best yet.
The Oset 12.5 racers took on the smaller Revvi Arena circuit, and as always, they put on a great show for the big crowd of spectators that gathered around the track to watch.
There was no stopping Tommy Ashmore in this class as he looks to add the EXGP title to the Indoor one he won in May by going 6 from 6 at LDR for the win and notching up a 9-point lead in the standings over Walter Shinger-Hulme, who rode a blinder to come second, ahead of Ollie Smillie, who made the long trip down from Scotland and was awarded a trip to the podium in third.
Eden Davies looked quick and smooth in fifth, Chace Dunstan racked up the points for fifth, and Jenson Wood picked himself up from a DNF for a good sixth.
The Mini E class was the busiest ever, which meant three heats of races doing battle over two qualifying races to see who would qualify through to the A, B and C Finals on each day. The points from the finals on Saturday and Sunday would decide the overall positions, and with fantastic wins in both finals, Charlie Needs had a stunning victory. Albie Dallas was once again on the gas and, with a second and a third, would claim the weekend runner-up spot, although he still leads the championship by 7 points going into this weekend’s finale.
Grayson-Blake Martin took a few tumbles but he doesn’t know when he is beaten and he came back to finish third overall after a dramatic final race where a number of the front runners had to fight through the pack. Aliyas Westwick gets faster every week and finished an excellent fourth, Parker Herbert was always in the mix and showed great speed in fifth, and Bear Todd has come on leaps and bounds and will be a surefire contender for a win at this weekend’s Greenfield finale.
In the Auto E3 class, which for the first time had to be split into two races, Kaylum Clark was in cracking form, taking the chequers on both days for the overall. Still, it doesn’t tell the full story as he had it far from his way with Hunter Dunstan, who ended the weekend in second, always in close contention. Aurora Young rode her heart out and was rewarded with a fantastic third overall, Theo Hancock has shown a liking for the E3 machine and rode a stormer for fourth, Maddox Knifton made an impressive debut in fifth, and Zach Elliott made the long trip over from Northern Ireland ended his weekend in an excellent sixth. Spare a thought for Oliver Harrington, who was riding the race of his life on Saturday, leading the charge after three laps before a big crash put an end to his chances. Still, despite being battered and bruised, he finished the race and gained valuable points to finish seventh overall.
Kaylum now has a 10-point cushion over Hunter going into this weekend’s title decider in Lincolnshire.
Oakley Jones was again at his sublime best in the Auto E5 class. In the Indoor Mini E Champ, he won all of his motos, whatever came his way, and in doing so, he has now racked up a 14-point lead in the standings.
Picking himself up from a few tumbles, the E5 Indoor title holder Raife Western kept Alfie James at bay with some excellent riding for second, with Alfie showing his liking for the LDR track in third. Ivy Rose Tasker looked at home on her E5, and a fourth was a massive result against tough opposition. Ortus Simons is a true battler and fought tooth and nail for every point to finish fifth, while Presley Purchase had some great races to finish sixth.
